The only CSA I’ve ever done was a meat CSA. I checked out the farm online and talked to one of the farmers. Benefits included choosing the size of the share and a convenient pick up point. I really liked it, but when our financial situation changed I gave it up. Since then I’ve done piecemeal meat, split a pig from an even more local farm with friends and split a cow with my sister.

I’d love to support a local farm with a CSA share, but I get enough out of my garden (and donated from a friend’s large, prolific garden) it doesn’t make sense for most of the season. What I want is a spring share ( for when stuff just isn’t coming up in my garden yet) and a winter share. I have yet to find a winter share that really makes sense for me, but I keep looking.

I love hearing about your CSA experience!

And I love the idea of splitting a pig! I have only know about cow shares around here. How much meat did it include? Did you get lard with it? I keep dabbling in the idea of getting a meat share, but since we don’t eat a lot of meat at home, I know we would need to share with a friend and probably still buy an extra freezer. I had clients with a cow share and I loved working with the different cuts.

Especially since we do not have a cellar space or cold storage for winter, I would love to have a winter share. I had a client with a winter share and it was a ton of potatoes, squash and I believe onions. All good of course, but they were so dirty which I think was an issue with the CSA- although, washing that type of produce can reduce the storage life, so it is all a compromise isn’t it.

Thanks for sharing your experience Sara!
